Otago makes eight changes to starting XV

Otago has possibly its biggest test of the season tomorrow and it has made a swag of changes in preparation.

Eight changes, in fact, are the main feature of the line-up announced to play Auckland at Eden Park tomorrow.

Only three of the starting forward pack from Saturday's loss to Canterbury have survived.

Sam Anderson-Heather drops to the bench as Sekonaia Pole gets the nod at hooker.

He will be joined by Hisa Sasagi and Jonah Aoina in a completely different front row.

Donald Brighouse also adds experience to the propping stocks from the bench after missing last week's game due to family reasons.

The loose forwards have also had a shake up, as Joketani Koroi and Sione Misiloi come in at blindside flanker and No8 respectively.

Koroi missed the Canterbury game after having concussion symptoms following the win over Southland two weeks ago. Misiloi wins the No8 jersey from Dylan Nel, who will add impact from the reserves.

There is plenty of firepower in a backline which has brought the dangerous Vilimoni Koroi on to the right wing in place of Mitchell Scott.

He and Jona Nareki give the side lethal weapons on each wing, while Matt Faddes has similar attacking capability at centre.

Youngster Matt Whaanga gets the start at second five-eighth ahead of Sio Tomkinson, while Melani Matavao comes in for Kurt Hammer at halfback.

Michael Collins will captain the side from fullback and will be able to add some local knowledge - Eden Park being his Super Rugby home ground with the Blues.

Standing in Otago's way is an Auckland side which has made changes of its own.

It is missing three key backs through injury in captain TJ Faiane, Melani Nanai and Jordan Trainor.

Tanielu Tele'a, Hoskins Sotutu, Caleb Clarke and Jacob Umaga all make their first starts of the season.

However, it is a line-up which still holds plenty of established flair.

Notable among that is No8 Akira Ioane, a powerful ball runner who has figured in All Black discussion in recent years.

Sam Prattley will captain the side from loosehead prop, while former Otago halfback Jonathan Ruru gets the start in the No9 jersey.

Auckland enters the game with a perfect record, claiming victories over Taranaki and Canterbury in its past two outings.

Otago had good patches against Canterbury last week, although the ability to be clinical deserted it.
