Tickets went on sale yesterday for the only All Black test in the South Island this year with a scheme being organised to get those from Canterbury south for the big game.

More than 3500 tickets had been sold for the July 22 test between the All Blacks and Fiji through preferential booking before they went on general sale to those south of the Waiau River yesterday.

The deal is usually limited to those living south of the Waitaki River but as the test is a fundraiser for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake it has been opened up to those living south of the Waiau River, which is about 130km north of Christchurch.

Otago Rugby Football Union marketing manager Doug McSweeney said he was pleased with the take-up of tickets and said they were looking at initiatives to help those from Christchurch get down to the test.

The union was thinking of laying on transport for people from Christchurch to get to Dunedin and also possibly a scheme where Dunedin residents could house Christchurch residents for a couple of nights around the test.

The national union hopes to raise $500,000 from the test.

The south of Waiau River scheme will run to June 17 before tickets go on general sale on June 20.
