Diminutive winger Maruia Haua was paid $20 for the two tries she scored in the Dunedin women's final for Alhambra-Union on Saturday.

Maruia (22), a hotel management graduate, was promised $10 for each try by her grandfather, Martin Haua, who was watching from the upstairs clubrooms at the North Ground.

"I'm just glad I caught the ball. I had such a cold feeling in my fingers because of the weather," Maruia said.

Rugby is a family affair with mother Nannette coaching the Alhambra-Union women's team to its fifth premier title.

She also played softball for Otago.

Maruia's brother, Philip (19), plays for the Alhambra-Union colts team, and her father, Phil, played more than 200 premier games for Alhambra-Union from 1982.

"I was taken to games when I was young to watch Dad play," Maruia said.

"Dad was an openside flanker and I used to wear a jersey with No 7 on it."

Phil Haua also played for Otago B, and brothers Neville, Boydie, Andy and Roger all played for Alhambra-Union and for the Otago touch team.

Eldon Clifton, a brother-in-law and a New Zealand champion boxer, was also watching the game on Saturday.

Maruia started playing rugby at Otago Girls' High School with Black Fern Kelly Brazier eight years ago and was a member of the Otago secondary schools team at that time.

It was her third championship banner with Alhambra-Union.
