Rugby: Clyde hoping for a happy birthday

The Clyde-Earnscleugh senior side will have a big incentive to beat Matakanui Combined tomorrow - the club is celebrating its 125th birthday.

The club, which plays at the Clyde Domain, has about 300 people attending the celebrations and a variety of activities are planned.

Though details are a little hazy, it is believed unofficial games of rugby were played in the Earnscleugh basin in the 1860s, during the gold rush period.

A couple of clubs are believed to have started up in the area but it was not until 1889 that an official club was started and Clyde-Earnscleugh came into existence.

Since then, the club has battled away, had its share of ups and downs and has not produced any All Blacks. It had three Otago representatives in its early days.

It is in good heart and its senior side had a 60-point win over Cromwell B last weekend.

The festivities will begin with a get-together at the clubrooms tonight and games tomorrow will involve sides of schoolchildren.

In the main game, old foes Clyde-Earnscleugh and Matakanui Combined will do battle. Clyde-Earnscleugh goes into the match as favourite.

Tomorrow night, a dinner will be held at the Clyde Bowling Club.

A special set of jubilee jerseys will be auctioned, and a best XV has been selected and will be announced at the club.

Former All Black hooker Andrew Hore will be guest speaker at the dinner.

The festivities will finish on Sunday, when a fun game will take place. It will feature players from different eras, with an emphasis on taking part, rather than victory.
