Rugby: Competition at crossroads

Next week's debriefing with representatives of the council of Otago Country clubs will determine the future of the countrywide rugby competition.

Otago Country chairman Geoff McPhee said the board would "see what comes out of the debrief" at the Clyde Rugby Football Club before deciding on the format of next year's competition.

The competition has not been popular with some clubs in Central Otago which has led to some clubs defaulting.

"Our objective was to improve the standard of country rugby but some people don't like change," McPhee said. "It was a better competition but it just needs some tweaking and streamlining."

Last weekend, only four matches were played in the competition because Upper Clutha defaulted to Clutha, and Alexandra defaulted to Toko.

Upper Clutha president Paul Cunningham said his players were not interested in the countrywide competition because there was too much travel.

"Our players voted with their feet last weekend," Cunningham said. "The new competition was pushed through against their will.

"Our players are not interested in spending all day travelling to play against Owaka and Clinton. We believe that the old competition format should be reinstated.

"The country board was not listening. We believe we should do what the players want."

The Otago Daily Times understands the new competition was pushed through because of the strong support by the Wakatipu and Arrowtown clubs.

Alexandra premier coach Ian Fraser said his team was forced to default four times this season because of a lack of props.

Local policeman Lance Davies had to work in the North Island for three weeks and Shane Fulton had to work in Christchurch. Monty Hall had a shoulder injury.

"Travel is not a problem to us because Alexandra is in the centre of the region," Fraser said.

He felt that local derbies, on a home and away basis, in the district had more interest for the supporters.

Under the old system, the winner of the Central competition would play in the countrywide grand final against the winner of the Southern competition.
