Rugby: Convincing win gives Kurow premier grade title

Kurow claimed the North Otago premier grade title with a convincing 46-21 win over St Kevins A in Oamaru on Saturday.

Kurow started with intensity and the writing was on the wall as it moved out to a five-goal lead after just 5min.

St Kevins rallied a little later to trail 13-25 at half-time but the College side could not produce the intensity it had shown at the beginning of other games.

Former Silver Fern Angela Mitchell was the outstanding performer for Kurow.

Playing at goal attack, Mitchell was strong against the defence with superb positional play.

Goal defence Vicki Laughton was often able to cut off the flat pass, causing turnovers which were quickly grabbed by mid-courter Nikita Hall.

Kurow simply did the basics well.

Mel Lewis (wing attack) proved she is a big-game player used to taking the knocks and handling the pressure, and she combined well with Mitchell and Kate Taylor to get the ball into the circle.

For St Kevins, defender Ella Conlan stood out with some brilliant play in the second half, while wing defence Lydia Langley kept on top of her opponents. - Terry O'Neill
