Steve Hepburn identifies three key areas in tonight's final.
1 DEFENCE
In the games that really count, it usually comes down to which side can defend better. The key is the ability to scramble when the heat goes on and be strong when the big boys come calling for both sides. Everyone has spoken about the running ability of the Counties-Manukau attackers. From Otago's point of view, they simply have to be stopped and then put on their backsides.
2 GOALKICKING
With plenty on the line, the inevitable shots at goal come into play. Converting three-point opportunities is going to be mightily important.
Glenn Dickson is taking them for Otago, with Hayden Parker still carrying a niggly hip injury. He missed just one shot last week but will be exposed to the outside elements tonight.
New Blues signing Baden Kerr will be the man for Counties-Manukau and he has slotted more than he has missed.
3 BALL CONTROL
In rugby in the 21st century, possession is king. If you have not got it, then you are not in the game. Many teams are not prepared to kick the ball out for field position for fear of turning the ball over.
So having the ball is vital.
The worst thing you can do is cough it up and give it away.
Knock-ons and forward passes must not occur tonight for either side to have a chance.
Both sides base their games on continuity. Dropped ball does not help this enterprise.
