Dunedin won a bruising game against Southern 11-5 to retain the Ron Reggett Memorial Trophy in Dunedin premier rugby at Kettle Park today.
Dunedin, playing with the strong wind at its back, held an 11-5 lead at the break and its strong defence and forward dominance held out Southern in the second spell.
The game ended in dramatic fashion when Southern No 8 Sam Crompton received a red card for stomping by referee Doug Rodgers.
Referee Doug Rodgers whistled for fulltime twice. The first time the touch judge intervened and Dunedin replacement Carl Anderson was given a yellow card for throwing a punch.
The referee restarted the game and Dunedin had the penalty and kicked the ball out and the referee called fulltime a second time.
It was the worst day of the winter for club rugby with atrocious conditions of wind and rain that soaked the grounds. The game between Harbour and Green Island at Watson Park, Port Chalmers, was called off 10 minutes early because of the conditions.
In three of the five games two of the losing teams did not score. Harbour beat Green Island 27-0, University A beat Taieri 23-0 and Alhambra-Union beat Zingari-Richmond 10-0.
Centre Ryan Grant scored his second try on fulltime to give University the bonus point win over Taieri.
The students lead the Gallaway Trophy competition on 32 points and are followed by Dunedin 26, Alhambra-Union 25, Harbour 24, Southern 23, Pirates 18, Zingari-Richmond 13, Green Island 11, Kaikorai 10 and Taieri 9.
