Rugby: First-half onslaught paves way for win by King's

An aggressive pack and first use of the wind proved key for King's High School in its Highlanders First XV game against Waitaki Boys' High School yesterday. King's won the match at Oamaru 29-12, its third win from three outings this season. It led 29-5 at the break.

The King's forwards controlled the first half and Waitaki Boys' was often pinned inside its own 22m.

The tactical kicking of halfback Caleb Gray and first five-eighth Gifford Henry also told for King's.

The forwards did the rest, with lock Jayden Smith dominating the lineout and prop Ayden Lloyd aggressive with the pick-and-go.

He scored the first of the five tries.

When the ball was sent wide, speedy wings Daniel Dam and Tim Tolovae both scored tries.

However, after the break King's faced a revitalised Waitaki side which kept it scoreless and netted two tries of its own with good backline moves.

Waitaki looked dangerous when the ball was moved wide and the best try was scored by wing Dean Fenwick in a move that began inside its half.

Openside flanker Jake Rhodes and hooker Ben Carr had solid games for Waitaki Boys'.

Kings 29 (Ayden Lloyd, Max Aitkenhead, Daniel Dam, Sam Johnson, Tim Tolovae tries; Gifford Henry 2 con),
Waitaki Boys' 12 (Levi Fogarty, Dean Fenwick tries; Matt Day con).

Halftime: 29-5.
