The Otago Rugby Football Union has given the thumbs-up to the inaugural Highlanders First XV competition by scheduling two games at Carisbrook tomorrow.

Kings High School will be matched against Central Southland College in the early game and the local derby between Kavanagh College and Otago Boys will be the main game.

The competition has been designed to improve the unity within the three provinces in the Highlanders franchise and to create pathways for promising players to move into the professional ranks.

"We have worked hard to create this competition for the Highlanders franchise and feel that the players deserve the chance to play at a test ground," Otago Rugby Football Union amateur rugby manager Justin Gardner said.

Gardner said the ORFU tried to give as many players as possible the chance to experience playing rugby at Carisbrook.

"We have played colts and premier one and two games on the ground this winter,"Gardner said.

"The schoolboys deserve their chance."

Waitaki Boys is the only unbeaten team after seven games and leads the competition with 32 points.

South Otago has a game in hand and is expected to move into second spot when it plays Gore High School.
