It has been a huge couple of weeks for new All Black Victor Vito.

First he was made a high chief of his home village of Fasito'o Uta in Samoa, but rugby commitments meant he could not attend the ceremony in the village last week, as he was training in New Plymouth after being picked in his first All Black squad.

His week got even better when he replaced Jerome Kaino on the field on Saturday, and to cap it off he was named on the blindside flank yesterday for the match against the Welsh at Carisbrook this Saturday.

"It's been a big couple of weeks, that is for sure. It is quite an honour to get that [title] bestowed on me," he said.

"Then to be selected today for the starting selection. It's something I've been after and something I want to continue on with."

The title was passed down by his grandfather, and even though Vito was born in Wellington he said he liked to get back to the islands as often as possible.

His family travelled from Wellington to accept the honour.

But getting the tattoo that traditionally accompanies the high chief honour is not on the agenda at the moment.

"It's not something I would not be considering at this time, but I've got to get a couple of weeks off to do that and then there is the recovery from that."

Vito (23) came through national age group teams and was a star of the New Zealand sevens side two years ago.

But his play in the bigger version of the game has improved this year, and with the rules encouraging more ball-runners, his elevation into the All Blacks was no surprise.

Then it was straight on to the paddock last week.

"I got on a little bit earlier than I thought last week. When you are in the moment you are in the moment, but at the end I could not believe I had just played a test."

Vito was surprised to be the only change to the All Black team for the Wales game.
