All Black Ma'a Nonu has received a slap over the wrist from his employer, the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU), for an expletive-laden radio interview.
Nonu was reprimanded during a meeting with the NZRU general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorensen in Wellington today, and is required to undertake a school visit to make amends.
The Hurricanes midfielder completed an extraordinary interview soon after his starring role in his side's 33-27 win over the Chiefs last Saturday, using the f-word seven times when answering two questions.
"Ma'a and I met and discussed the incident and he acknowledges that he has let himself down on this occasion," Sorensen said in a statement.
"As a result, we have found that his conduct constitutes a breach of our collective employment agreement and while I'm disappointed in Ma'a's behaviour, he has fronted up well and taken responsibility for his actions, including making a full public apology.
"Ma'a has been reprimanded and will be required to undertake a community project including a school visit to talk about the responsibilities of being a professional rugby player."
Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper said team management had also applied a sanction this week, but wouldn't reveal specifics.
Nonu, 27, was contrite as he fronted the media at Hurricanes training on Tuesday.
"After a tough game there was a bit of emotion flying around," the 46-test veteran said. "I guess, being a professional sportsman you've got to be responsible for what you say. At the end of the day it hurts a lot of people."
