Rugby: Otago debut for league convert

Otago rugby fans will get their first look at league convert Michael Witt in tomorrow night's game against Northland in Whangarei.

Witt has been named on the bench for the Air New Zealand Cup game and will get a chance to make his first-class debut at Okara Park.

It has been six months since the goal-kicking five-eighth was signed by Otago and given to the Taieri club to embark on his crash course in rugby after being rejected by the New Zealand Warriors.

Witt has been waiting for his chance in the blue jersey and got to play for Otago B last week.

His rugby background might be lean but Witt's exceptional boot and ability to break the line could be welcome additions to a misfiring Otago backline.

If he gets 20 to 30 minutes tomorrow night and impresses, he will present a strong case for a starting berth in the coming weeks, especially as incumbent first five-eighth Chris Noakes is out of form.

There are three changes to the Otago starting XV from the line-up beaten 19-12 by Manawatu last week.

Aaron Bancroft and Ryan Shortland form a new midfield combination, replacing Andrew Parata and the injured Brett Mather, and Paul Grant replaces Steven Setephano at No 8.

Shortland, another league convert, has appeared for Otago on the wing but played league in the centres, while Bancroft gets another opportunity to settle after a stop-start season.

Grant has looked lively off the bench and will join an exciting and mobile Otago loose trio.
