An off-duty police officer called for back-up after witnessing a fight during the First XV match between King's High School and John McGlashan College in Dunedin on Saturday.

McGlashan first five-eighth Hamish Sutherland was taken to hospital with concussion and a suspected broken cheekbone after allegedly being punched by a King's player during the first half.

Sutherland (18), a year 13 pupil, was later cleared of any break, though he had a badly swollen cheek and needed treatment for a split eyebrow.

He told the Otago Daily Times yesterday he did not remember exactly what triggered the incident which developed after he was tackled into touch.

"I got tackled and it broke into a wee tussle. I'm not really sure what happened after that, because I got knocked out."

Following the incident at McGlashan's home ground, referee Mitchell Will sent off King's prop Hayden Fleury.

He faces an automatic two-week suspension unless he or the school wishes to call a judicial hearing.

The Otago Rugby Football Union also has the right to consider a hearing, and the possibility of further punishment, once it has seen the referee's report.

The game was stopped for a short period but no other player was disciplined.

King's principal Dan Reddiex was disappointed the incident had taken some of the gloss off his side's outstanding season.

The school has won seven of its eight games and leads the Highlanders First XV competition.

"My understanding of the events, having spoken to our coach, is that one of our students retaliated to an incident during the game, throwing several punches," Reddiex said yesterday.

"The referee responded by sending him from the field, and certainly I agree with the referee's actions. I do not condone at all the behaviour of our student."

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross, of Dunedin, confirmed police were called to the scene after an off-duty female police officer, understood to be the mother of a King's player, witnessed the incident.

"There was an off-duty officer up there who witnessed it and tried to intervene and called for backup," he said.

No arrests were made, but it was too soon to say what action - if any - would be taken, Snr Sgt Ross said.

The game was not called off early, contrary to earlier reports. King's won 31-12.
