Rugby: SBHS remains unbeaten

Southland Boys' retained its unbeaten record and top place in the Highlanders First XV rugby competition today with a narrow 7-6 win over Gore High School.

Conditions were atrocious and the players became mud spattered after just 10 minutes into the game at Gore.

The mud and rain led to numerous mistakes by both teams. It was a game played in the forwards.

Keanu Kahukura scored the only try of the game and the conversion by Scott Eade gave Southland Boys' the narrow win.

Gore first five-eighth Hamish Cooke kicked two penalty goals when the score was 7-6. It was a battle of attrition in the second spell.

Southland Boys' lead the top section of the competition, but Otago Boys' narrowed the gap with a four try bonus point 22-6 win over Kings in rainy conditions at Littlebourne.

Centre Makasua Tanavasa scored two tries with strong running and second five-eighth Michael Collins was a rock in the midfield. Otago Boys' led 5-3 at halftime.

First half tries to Braydon Pennycook and Mark McKenzie gave John McGlashan a 14-0 win over Waitaki Boys' in Dunedin.

South Otago came back strongly in the second spell to beat Kavanagh College 14-7 at Balclutha with John Fa'amoe and Karl Still scoring the tries.

The scores were: Southland Boys 7, Gore 6; Otago Boys' 22, Kings 6; John McGLashan 14, Waitaki Boys' 0; South Otago 12, Kavanagh College 7; Dunstan 31, Verdon College 19; Central Southland College 8, St Kevins 6.
