UNIVERSITY A utility back David Thompson stamped his mark on Dunedin club rugby yesterday by scoring five tries in his side's 11 try 67-0 romp over University B.
Thompson set the game alight when he ran from his own goal line to halfway and right winger Ryan Grant scored on the other side of the paddock for the first try.
Thompson, in his first year at university, started on the left wing and displayed speed off the mark, an ability to beat his man and an uncanny knack of being in the right place to make the decisive break.
He added another dimension to his game when he switched to fullback and gained 60m with accurate line kicks to the corner.
University B was competitive in close, but as soon as the ball was moved wide it did not have the pace to defend against the slick passing of the A team.
The University A backs were given quick ball from halfback Sean Romans and the backline moved more efficiently when Dan Snee moved from fullback to first five-eighth.
University A scored six tries to lead 34-0 at the break and added another five tries and 33 more points in the second spell.
It was more torrid in the forwards with No 8 Paul Grant having a lively game and lock Ash Johnson winning two-handed ball in the line-out.
- University A 67 (David Thompson 5, Ryan Grant 2, Dan Snee, Dale Jarden, Kieran Williams, Jeremy Aldworth tries; Snee 6 conversions), University B 0. Half-time: 34-0. Referee: Jeff Grubb.
