Rugby fever is building in Dunedin, with about 8000 preferential booking tickets already snapped up for the Tri-Nations test between the All Blacks and the Springboks at Carisbrook on July 12.

The organisers of the test, the first to be played at Carisbrook in three years, have also confirmed Colin Meads and three Otago rugby identities will help launch public ticket sales on June 3.

"Sales are just on 8000 as of right now," Otago Rugby Football Union marketing manager Chris Green said yesterday.

"We're happy with the sales, given that we still have 10 days until we go on sale to the public south of the Waitaki and advertise.

"The pleasing thing is the uptake of these areas, with the rugby community taking advantage of their opportunities."

Green said the Main Stand was 73% full, the Rose Stand was at 51% and the Terrace Gold (seated) area was at 82%.

Members of the "rugby community" have been able to get in first to book their seats to the test.

On June 3, the public in Otago and Southland will get their chance, a full two weeks before sales are opened up to the rest of the country.

The ground has a capacity of 30,000 and the ORFU is desperate to see it filled to ensure Dunedin remains a venue for significant tests in the future.

To mark the return of test rugby to Dunedin - 100 years after Carisbrook hosted its first international - and push ticket sales, a major launch will be held in the city on June 3.

All Black great Colin Meads and former Otago All Blacks Kevin Skinner, Chris Laidlaw and Marc Ellis will attend various events, including a game of rippa rugby in the Octagon and a quiz night.

On July 12, nude rugby will return to St Clair beach, and the popular tent village concept will be reinstated.

The ORFU is expected to reveal details about the village soon.

Meanwhile, Taieri is still leading the race to be the Otago representative in a junior curtain-raiser to the test.

Taieri has 425 ticket nominations, ahead of Southern (223) and Green Island (200).

Clutha (Otago Country), Old Boys (North Otago) and Blues (Southland) lead the other regions.
