The silver medal-winning New Zealand women's sevens team will come to Dunedin as part of a national tour upon their return home.

The team will be at the Pirates Rugby Club on Friday September 2, the last date of their tour.

They will aim to inspire young players, especially girls, by sharing their Olympic experiences. The tour will see them visit schools, rugby clubs and girls' rugby tournaments around the country. They will both share their experiences and take coaching sessions with Year 7 to 13 girls.

Women's rugby is the fastest growing area of the game in New Zealand and the tour seeks to allow teenagers to connect with the country's elite players.

New Zealand Rugby Head of Women's Rugby Cate Sexton said they were proud of the team's performance in Rio.

"These women are fantastic role models for young girls, with their dedication, fitness, training and skill, and the way they represent New Zealand on the international stage," she said.

"The players are keen to give back and help grow the game for girls. We can't wait to introduce them to the next generation of players and the girls to get up close to an Olympic medal."

The team went unbeaten through the Rio tournament, before being beaten by Australia 24-17 in the final.
