Dean Moeahu will celebrate his 37th birthday in style today.

The Green Island captain and halfback will play his 200th premier rugby match against Pirates and have his first game at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

"All the stars are aligned," Moeahu said.

"My 37th birthday, playing at the stadium and my 200th game.

"It's a pretty big day."

It has been a long journey for Moeahu, who played his first premier game off the bench against University A in 1995 at the University Oval.

He played his first full game the following week when Green Island was beaten by Pirates 49-21 at Hancock Park.

There was precedent in the family because his elder brother, Mike, played 163 games for Green Island at halfback before Moeahu started.

His brother was 16 years older and his longevity in premier rugby was not the inspiration that kept Moeahu playing.

"No, not really," he said.

"I kept playing because I'm enjoying the game. It's fun.

"I suppose it's my competitive nature that has kept me in the game.

"At the age of 37 I like to test myself against younger players."

Moeahu said rugby was a much faster game today than when he started playing premier rugby in 1995.

"Players today are a lot better technically, especially at the breakdown," he said.

"But the physicality is not as intense as it was.

"There used to be a lot more devious tactics at the bottom of rucks."

Moeahu's toughest opponent at halfback was Corey Brown (Harbour).

Other strong opponents were Casey Mee (University A), Mark Chapman-Smith (Dunedin) and Alan Hogarth (Taieri).

The most difficult team to play against was Dunedin.

"They've always had the wood on us," he said.

"I could count on one hand the number of times we've beaten them."

He does not see himself beating the premier record of 269 games that is held by Erik Vaafusuaga (Taieri and Green Island).

Moeahu played his 100th premier game against Southern in bitterly cold conditions at Miller Park in 2001. Southern won 44-14.

"It was the worst conditions I have ever experienced playing rugby," he recalled.

Moeahu played for Otago B for three years and had three games for Otago in 2001.

He then went overseas for two years and played for the West of Scotland in Glasgow and for the Spartans in Gloucester.

Moeahu has been supported by wife Nicki during his long career and she will bring their two children - Jaxon (3) and Charlotte (1) - to the stadium today.
