Junior tournament growing

Junior tennis players from around the country are set to flock to Dunedin next week.

The Southern Junior Indoor Open has attracted 170 entrants, an increase of about 60 on normal numbers and up 40 on 2018 and 2019.

Held at the Edgar Centre, it will be the biggest tournament held south of Christchurch in many years.

Tennis Otago tournament director Ahmad Abdul-Rahman said the organisation was proud of the growth.

It had worked hard to ensure the tournament experience was one of the best in New Zealand.

The tournament is open to players aged nine to 16 and consists of both singles and doubles.

The highest entries have come in the 14-and-under boys singles, which has attracted 33 players.

Both the boys and girls 12-and-under singles competition have exceeded 20 players.

The tournament begins on Tuesday and runs until Friday.
