Riding on the back of his Australian Open performance, Queenstown doubles specialist Ben McLachlan has leapt up the official rankings.

McLachlan has jumped 37 places to be ranked 36 in the world for doubles.

It is a rapid rise for McLachlan, who only 18 months ago was outside the world top 200 and was sleeping on friends' couches.

But he has quietly risen up the ratings and that rise got a big boost with his effort last week which was reflected when the rankings were released yesterday.

McLachlan and partner Jan-Lennard Struff made it through to the Australian Open semifinals before losing narrowly to Croatian Mate Pavic and Austrian Oliver Marach.Pavic and Marach went on to win the doubles title.

McLachlan also picked up nearly $NZ100,000 for his efforts and has flown to Japan this week to link with the country's Davis Cup team.

McLachlan's mother is Japanese and he declared for that country last year. Japan will play Italy this weekend.

Struff has also enjoyed a big jump up the rankings. He has risen 82 places in the rankings to be at 75.
