Anderson's Bay and Otago Boys’ High Blue prevailed in close ties in Dunedin club tennis on Saturday, beating North Otago and Balmacewen respectively.
Anderson’s Bay, formerly known as Eastern Harbour, won 4-2 while the school team, playing without current pupils, won following a games countback after rubbers and sets were even.
Taieri defaulted to Otago Boys’ White, despite fielding a Division 2 team on the day and having named eight players in its squad at the beginning of the season.
Shaun Paringatai, playing for North Otago, carried on his winning way with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ryan Eggers in the top singles match. Eggers was unable to power up his serve as he continued to recover from two shoulder dislocations.
Megan Rogers ran hot and cold in beating North Otago’s Belinda Hirst 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and veteran Phil Mirfin and Georgia Hume took straight sets wins for Anderson’s Bay, while the doubles were shared.
OBHS won a tie of two halves, with Balmacewen’s Paddy Ou and Henry Neas too strong for Mat McCutcheon and George Alexander in singles in the top order, before they were were taken to a third set match tiebreak in doubles.
Jason So (OBHS) battled to a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win over Shane Keenan and Michael Chen won 6-1, 6-1, before So and Chen held on 7-5 6-4 in doubles. When the countback was applied, Otago Boys’ had a one game margin.
