An independent commissioner has given the green light for a new Woolworths supermarket to be built on a vacant section in Christchurch.

The independent commissioner panel approved the establishment of the new commercial centre, anchored by a supermarket, off Madras St in St Albans on October 13.

The application to build on the 1.44ha site at 476-494 Madras St, which was formerly home to an Orion works depot, was made by Woolworths New Zealand Ltd.

The consent grants Woolworths permission to develop a 3350sq m supermarket with a click-and-collect facility, along with 860sq m of small-format retail at ground level and 530sq m of non-retail space on the first floor.

The site will include 223 car parks, with two vehicle access from Madras St and a central pedestrian walkway, chrislynchmedia.com reported.
