Takapuna student wins youth MP YouTube competition

Takapuna Grammar student and Youth MP Amelia MacDonald has won a video competition in which she explains the impact Youth Parliament had on her.

The competition invited youth MPs to make a video about their experiences and impressions of this year's Youth Parliament held in July.

In a three-minute video, Ms MacDonald explained her first impression of Parliament with just one word: "wow".

Acting Youth Affairs Minister Nathan Guy said friends and members of the public were invited to comment on video entries posted on YouTube, considered by an independent judging panel.

It was the first time video entries had sought and posted on YouTube, he said.

It was a great way to foster debate among young people about Parliament and the political system, he said.

A total of $5000 was awarded to the winner and runner-ups to support further study.

The project is held every three years as a joint initiative of the Youth Affairs Minister and the Speaker, with youth MPs aged between 16-18 years-old.

The Youth MPs sat on select committees, attended caucus meetings, and debated a bill.
