Beach walkway still closed; progress towards reopening

The Tunnel Beach Walkway remains closed since last year’s storms left the popular coastal track with multiple large slips.

But behind the scenes, there may be some progress on eventually reopening the trail.

At the Saddle Hill Community Board last week, chairman Paul Weir said he had been in touch with the Department of Conservation to ask when it might reopen.

He was told a geotechnical investigation was still in progress, which would be used to inform whatever remedial work was required to ensure the track was repaired and resilient to future weather events.

However, a media request by The Star has confirmed there has been an update.

Department of Conservation Coastal Otago operations manager Gabriel Davies said the geotechnical investigation had been completed, and it expected to receive a report on its findings later in the month.
