Club celebrates 30 years

This month, the Dunedin 60+ Club celebrated our 30th anniversary with much pleasure, writes LEN LEITH, Dunedin 60+ Club honorary secretary.

The decision to change our meeting venue to Blind Low Vision premises meant the celebration and AGM was our first meeting there.

With parking woes behind us, it was a happy and chatty group of about 100 who attended and enjoyed the catered event.

The required AGM business was despatched promptly and it was on to the celebration of 30 years as a club, with fond memories of days gone by and an eye to the future.

A catalogue of photos ran through the projector and brought back many happy memories of the club groups and activities, as well as members past, many who are no longer with us.

It was a special delight for Dunedin 60+ Club president Moira Ingham to welcome Joan Stuart, life member and wife of our founder Fred Stuart, who died on February 4.

As our special guest, Joan assisted Moira to cut the 30th anniversary cake, cleverly iced by club member Pat Collins.

The entertainment by our own Sixties Entertainers was on the theme of celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s platinum jubilee and featured songs from a list compiled to represent the Queen’s favourites.

Our stand-in for QEII, was Beverley Kay-Donner (crown and all), who was surrounded by a well-dressed cast.

The next general meeting of Dunedin 60+ Club will be held on Wednesday, June 1, at the Blind Low Vision Hall, 458 Hillside Rd — enter through the Law St entrance, turn left to the Social Hall.

Please arrive from 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

The noticeboards will be set up, with all club information. The book and puzzle exchange will be available. All these are set up in the hall.

For new members, the fee of $2 is waived. A host will greet you and show you around.

Co-ordinators will be available to take names for Sunday movies, Culture and Coffee, and Tavern Lunch groups.

Our treasurer will be on hand to take your annual subscription fee of $10, if not yet paid.

Guest speaker on June 1 will be the entertaining and vivacious Tahu McKenzie, who will tell us all about Orokonui Ecosanctuary.

This will be followed by updates from our president and then refreshments.
