Fitness, family, and friendship will come together when Emerson’s Dunedin Marathon returns for the 45th time on September 5.

Chairwoman Becs Adlam is filled with enthusiasm as she looks forward to the big day.

The event, run by the Caversham Harrier & Athletic Club, had become iconic in Dunedin’s sporting calendar.

The variety of options, from the full and half marathon to the 10km or 5km run or walk, was one of the main reasons the event was so successful.

While some trained rigorously for the AIMS certified full-marathon, the event offered a chance for everyone to get involved.

The inclusive nature of the event contributed to its special atmosphere.

"Our key phrase is ‘run it your way,’ which means it doesn’t have to be a run, but doing it your way," Ms Adlam said.

The event welcomed participants of all ages and abilities, with races accommodating families, wheelchair users, and blind-assisted runners.

Alongside other committee members she would be a "pod leader" on the day.

"Each pod leader runs a specific area of the marathon."

She credited the Caversham Harriers for their organising skills in running the marathon.

"They’ve got everything so well set up ... it makes it easy for someone like me to come in and just help where I can."

She also thanked naming rights sponsor Emerson’s Brewery.

"We are just so lucky to have the support of Emerson’s."

The "sense of excitement" on race day was palpable, she said.

Although it was a long day for organisers — they start at 5am — she said there was a buzz that fills the air on race day.

"You see all the people, the families that are supporting, the friends, that’s what makes the event as great as it is."

Her advice for anyone considering taking part was "just do it".

"Just sign up for the walk and then next year you might do the 5km run."
