The Traffic and Parking Bylaw enables the council to regulate traffic and parking controls in the city. That meant balancing the needs of road users with protecting and promoting public safety on roads and parking areas owned or managed by the council.
In a statement, group manager transport Jeanine Benson said reviewing the bylaw ensured the council’s traffic and parking regulations were fit for today and for the future, and would make the bylaw easier to understand for everyone.
The current bylaw came into effect in 2010 and since then changes to technology and legislation mean some sections of the bylaw are out of date and no longer fit for purpose.
Proposed changes to the bylaw would largely retain existing conditions, but re-structure and add more information to make guidance easier to understand.
It would add new clauses with more information about resolutions, permits, parking areas and how issues such as engine braking and driving on unformed roads could be restricted by the council. It will also update terminology and references to align with today’s legislation and technology.
