Governance expertise in Otago and Southland regions is set for a boost after 24 local directors and executives graduated this week from the Institute of Directors governance development programme.

They were (left row, from front Lyneta Russell, Sarah Middleton, Rachael Masteron, Shona Robertson, Louise Taylor, Nicola Williams; (middle row) Sophie Barker, Bernie de Bono, Maree Baker-Galloway, James Smith, Hywel Lloyd, Grant Gibson; (right row) Bridget Irving, Adam La Hood, Peter Dearden, Robert Scurr, John Chambers, Neill Finn-House and Stephen Craig-Pearson. Absent were David Hutchison, Glenn Alexander, Kelly Macknight, Sarah Saunderson-Warner and Trevor McIntyre.

Branch spokesman Pat Heslin said those who had participated had come away with a thorough understanding of the role of the board, board protocols, the distinction between governance and management and how to get the right information through board papers.

The programme was run over 10 months, providing training, guidance and support to new directors and executives who reported to boards.

Experienced directors Kathy Grant, Stuart McLauchlan, Martin Dippie and Graham Crombie presented the programme.

''Our governance development programme participants have developed a solid foundation in governance and we look forward to seeing them use their skills to contribute to business and community organisations in our region. The future of governance in Otago and Southland is in good hands,'' Mr Heslin said.
