Federated Farmers is awaiting the outcome of a study it commissioned into the cost of introducing a rental system for Transpower's transmission lines on privately-owned rural property.
The study by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research will determine whether it is feasible for landowners to charge Transpower rental for transmission pylons on their land.
Federated Farmers economics and commerce spokesman Phil York hoped the study would be completed soon.
He said Federated Farmers thought an annual rental was appropriate when dealing with electricity infrastructure on private property.
"If [Transpower] has easements that's fine, but we think it's a lot better for people to get an annual rental.
If we find this study is favourable to our position - and we hope it will be - then we will go to the Government," he said.
