Dr Thomas Turner, of Ohio State University, who judged this year's events, said there was a need to encourage young people to ''get involved'' in the beef industry .
''We need to get more quality young people involved and we certainly have that here.''
Dr Turner, a prominent agricultural academic, has been recognised for his work with students in animal sciences at the university, his work in the Ohio beef industry and his work with youth, in particular coaching young people in livestock judging.
He has judged internationally.
He said he had two vital tips for the 25 entrants aged from 8 to 13 in the Canterbury show's junior events.
''Watch the judge all the time. Ignore the other people, especially mum and dad.
''Inside the ring, there is just you and me.''
The second piece of advice was to make sure to present the animal well, learn to use a ''show stick'' and try to position the animal as if it was the subject of a still photograph, with feet perfectly placed, Dr Turner said.
