As dairy farmers moved on from old leases, stock was a common sight on Otago roads yesterday.

The dairy season runs from June 1 to May 31 and Gavin Russell was having a "very busy day" moving house and moving stock to a new lease block down the road from his old property in Momona.

"Everyone is moving around and moving cows," he said.

Before "Gypsy Day", as it is known, the Otago Regional Council issued a statement urging farmers, sharemilkers and truck drivers to keep roads safe and clean from stock waste.

ORC resource management director Selva Selvarajah said animal waste spillage from cartage trucks caused unnecessary mess on roads and could create dangers for motorists.

In order to combat the problem, farmers should stand stock overnight before transporting them and truck drivers should avoid overflow from their effluent tanks on the way by utilising the network of effluent disposal sites in Otago, Dr Selvarajah said.

Mr Russell had stood his stock overnight and moved them early in the morning "so we didn't make a mess of the roads".

He believed other farmers did the same.

"We try and do the best we possibly can for the environment."
