With pre-lamb crossbred fleece coming to an end, prices were up to 2% cheaper, Roger Fuller, of Elders Primary Wool, said.
Second-shear and combing oddments remained unchanged to slightly cheaper, while a good offering of mid-micron wool saw very erratic prices, although the levels were still quite good, Mr Fuller said.
A small offering of merino wool saw prices in some micron categories higher than recent sales, he said.
Competition continued to be dominated by Chinese activity.
Wool had been a ''quiet achiever'' over the past few weeks, ASB rural economist Nathan Penny said in the bank's latest commodities weekly.
Prices for 35-micron wool over the previous four weeks averaged 5% higher than the four weeks prior. Prices were around 15% higher than a year ago.
A shortage of wool was driving prices higher, with sheep flocks both in New Zealand and Australia under pressure.
The number of sheep in New Zealand has fallen to fewer than 30 million, while it was expected wool exports in Australia would fall around 7% over the season ahead.
With little sign of sheep numbers recovering ''any time soon'', prices were expected to remain firm over the season, he said.
The new season in Australia had provided some much-needed support for the finer end of the market, which finished last season with disappointing premiums following high supply, Rabobank's latest agribusiness monthly said.
