A two-day workshop on the effect of the new Dunedin Hospital on national and local roads nearby began in Dunedin today.
The site chosen for the hospital lies between the two one-way State Highway 1 roads and crosses St Andrew St, on the former Cadbury factory site and Wilson’s car park.
NZ Transport Agency regional relationships director Jim Harland said the new hospital in its new location provided ''a catalyst for possible once-in-a-lifetime changes to the Dunedin transport network''.
''Its construction and operation in the town centre provides an opportunity to better integrate the transport network with the activities of the Dunedin central city.''
The workshop, run by the NZTA and the Dunedin City Council, would include presentations by the University of Otago, Otago Regional Council, Port Otago and the Chamber of Commerce.
The NZTA and the council would present at the workshop on ''potential future network scenarios''.
There would be other opportunities for stakeholders and the community to provide feedback as the design process continued.

Seriously?? They're going to do this now?! It couldn't be more of a joke if they tried. Having spent god knows how much upending the one-way systems and other CBD roading with cycle lanes, bus hubs, new kerbing designs, Barnes dances, new traffic lights, etc, they're going to get the white board out now to see how it could all be reconfigured for the future? This is unbelievable - and how much has it cost the taxpayers and ratepayers for the work on these roads to date? Not to mention all the lost car parks that aren't going to be replaced. I hope there's a real outcry about this. This planning should have been done FIRST.

It's a pathetic effort by the council and shows what happens when a frindge group gets to use their 'we know best' attitude on the rest of us.
Is this just a brain fart? did somebody just wake up and think, How long has this been in the pipeline for? Is this just justification why the crap cycle lanes have been constructed. All such projects should have been placed on hold until a decision was made. if not why not all those in key positions should be sacked for wasting tax payers money.
One of the many inevitable complications of deciding to build the new hospital in the central city. Presented as an opportunity. Yes, an opportunity to spend other people's money. NZTA has got no incentive to save public money. In fact, the natural tendency to empire-building probably fosters the reverse.
Moan, moan, moan - imagine living life seeing the negative in everything; so sad - yay, we're getting a new hospital, yay, our roads will be improved...but no, blah, blah, blah...:(
