The trust pushing to reopen the Chain Hills tunnel to walkers and cyclists hopes a naming rights sponsor will help push its fundraising drive over the line.

The Dunedin Tunnels Trail Trust has until April 27 to raise $400,000 in loans and $150,000 in donations to buy land around the tunnel and secure access to it.

By yesterday, it had surpassed one of its two fundraising goals, having raised $405,000 in loans.

However, donations were lagging, at just $19,255.

Trust chairman Gerard Hyland said the next fundraising initiative was to sell naming rights for the tunnel portal.

Hardly a surprise here is there. We have a great cycling fraternity who incessantly demand everyone else subsidise their leisure pursuits. But when it comes to paying their way, they always go missing. Come on Wheels Dunedin, stop flapping your gums and open your wallets - yeah I know, its never going to happen. Oh but DCC and government absolutely should waste just a few million more on the noisy scroungers.

This is another project along with the $10million for the Pt Chalmers track that just should go away. We payers, not the leaners, just can't afford it.
