Hundreds of people of all ages stood outside the Queen St house, lit candles, laid flowers and toys, and blew bubbles, in tribute to Liane Dickason (6) and her twin sisters Karla and Maya (2).
The girls’ mother, Lauren Dickason, was charged with their murder last Thursday.
Last night’s service was led by Timaru Hospital chaplain the Rev Alan Cummins, who read a letter the girls’ father, Graham, had written.
"My words are few. On Thursday my life was turned upside down.
"It is a loss I’ll carry for the rest of my life.
"Pray for my Lauren. She’s a victim as well.
"I’ve already forgiven her and I ask you to as well. It is the key to healing our loss."
Mr Cummins then spoke on behalf of Mr Dickason’s mother and sisters, who said
they were still struggling to comprehend what had happened.
"Graham’s move was tough for us in South Africa.
"Despite the distance, we managed to stay close. But this week the distance felt so great."
They said they were touched by how the community united, and that their son and brother was able to get support from those around him.
