Film review: Sex Tape

Film fails to deliver on anything bordering sexy, writes Christine Powley.

Sex Tape
Director: Jake Kasdan
Cast: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Rob Lowe, Harrison Holzer, Jack Black
Rating: (R16)
1 star out of 5.

Cameron Diaz had a hit with Bad Teacher in 2011. So here she is back with the same director, Jake Kasdan, and Jason Segel, who had a secondary role in Bad Teacher but has been promoted to male lead.

The reason for any of it is hard to fathom. Bad Teacher was a hit because of a heavily promoted sexy car-wash scene, not because of any chemistry between her and Segel.

The plot, such as it is, is that Annie (Diaz) and Jay (Segel) had a sizzling sex life at the start of their relationship but 10 years on, they barely remember what sex is.

One night when the kids are away they decide to spice things up by making a sex tape with Jay's new iPad, the one with really good camera resolution. (If nothing else, this film has already made its money from all the Apple product placement!)

Then, because Jay is part of an iPad network, the tape is sent to all their friends and they have to track the other iPads down and delete the tape.

There are a few small laughs along the way but the main reaction is bemusement that anyone thought this was a good idea.

Best thing: We all know that Rob Lowe is up for a laugh (appearing in a film called Sex Tape with his history shows it) and here he makes his cameo count.

Worst thing: It is no real surprise, but the sex tape bit is a serious cop-out. When it suits the joke it is supposed to be hot stuff but all the bits we are allowed to peek at are seriously non-erotic.

See it with: Anyone who has only a fuzzy idea of how file-sharing works, because if you know your way around a computer network you are just going to be annoyed.
