CD Reviews: Beck

American artist Beck might have first come to attention more than two decades ago for his space-funk and trippy electronic noodling, but his more laid-back moments have their place, too.

And that is where Morning Phase resides, evoking memories and textures akin to 2002's introspective effort, Sea Change.

Both albums share the same line-up of musicians, including drummer Joey Waronker and Beck's dad, David Richard Campbell, who supplies string arrangements.

Beck puts acoustic guitar front and centre and then builds on that. The result is warm, spacious and occasionally soaring.

  • Beck. Morning Phase. Capitol.
  • 4 stars out of 5.
