CD reviews: Kurt Vile

From the banjo meets drum machine juxtaposition of I'm an Outlaw to the lapsteel and piano of Life Like This, from the Farfisa organ and resonator guitar to blooming horns and synths, Philadelphian Kurt Vile's sixth album captures a songwriter in both introspective and assured moods.

Recorded in a number of studios across the US, the troubadour nature of the album's genesis lends it a patchwork (not patchy) quality: a laidback groove (Dust Bunnies), perhaps inspired by the late Lou Reed, gives way to warm acoustic finger-picking (That's Life, tho) and flows on to the tactile drum brushwork of Wheelhouse and the off-kilter rhythmic accents of Life Like This.

Kurt Vile. b'lieve i'm goin down. Matador.
