CD reviews: Mel Parsons

Raised on the West Coast, Mel Parsons has roamed far and wide in recent years and, in filling her passport with various stamps, she has also broadened her musical reach.

Her third album Drylands mines a songwriting seam rich in both confidence and subtlety.

For example, Parsons might boast backing vocals by acclaimed Canadian Ron Sexsmith on the excellent Don't Wait, but she and co-producer Gerry Paul make sure the guest visit isn't overplayed.

That said, there are delightful harmonies (from a range of people, including Anika Moa) throughout this album that, along with assured, deft musicianship, add strength to a solid lyrical spine.

Mel Parsons. Drylands. Cape Road Recordings.
