CD reviews: Merchandise

With each passing record, Merchandise’s roots as a noisy Tampa Bay post-punk band are harder to detect.

"Reborn as a rock band" with 2014’s After The End, the band’s debut for 4AD, A Corpse Wired For Sound, shows they are more "stadium" than ever, reaching higher for more passionate and more powerful closing credits music.

Album highlight Crystal Cage’s melancholic chug hinges on the dub funk of its near-slap bassline, pinging around underneath frontman Carson Cox.

I Will Not Sleep Here calls to mind ’90s emo acts such as Death Cab For Cutie: a little bit uncool, a bit cheesy, but genuine and honest in its writing.
