CD Reviews: The Tiny Lies

Lyttelton Records delivers another quality release, this time a seductive exploration of dark country-folk by Christchurch duo Charlotte Ivey and Harley Williams.

Through duet, shared vocals and harmony, they explore a broader palette than on 2011 EP Trials, calling on a cast that includes label-mate Delaney Davidson (lap steel), Dunedin's John Egenes (pedal steel) and Anita Clark (strings) to augment songs that have a bruised blue hue.

Williams' vocals and lyrical anachronisms speak of an old heart while Ivey's smoky pipes position her closer to the present, setting up a beguiling tug-of-war.

  • The Tiny Lies. The Oaks They Will Bow. Lyttelton Records.
  • Four stars out of five.
