Currently working on a follow up to their well-received self-titled debut album, Auckland post-punk trio God Bows to Math are taking a break from recording to play 10 dates across New Zealand and Australia.

Taking their name from San Pedro's Minutemen - themselves a punk trio - and a track from the 1984 album Double Nickels on the Dime, God Bows are in their fifth year of existence, have nearly 10 releases to their name, and numerous national tours.

Musically, the trio - guitarist Martin Phillips, drummer Thomas Morrison and bassist Sam Cussen - are firmly rooted in punk, with a heavy driving rhythm section supporting noisy feedback-swirled guitar and often screamed/chanted vocals.

The group will perform at Chick's Hotel in Port Chalmers tonight, before returning to the North Island, and then to Australia, where they'll play four shows over as many nights.

''I'm really looking forward to [heading to Australia],'' bassist Sam Cussen says down the line from Auckland.

''We met a guy a while ago, who played a show in New Zealand, and he basically booked our whole first tour of Australia [in April 2012] for us. From that we just know a bunch of people and booked this.

''I have no idea [why more bands don't tour Australia]. I think people think it's harder than it is. It's not that much more expensive than flying to Wellington and back. You might not get the monetary return, but it's so worth it. It's just intimidating.

''[The crowds] were surprisingly amazing [last time], especially in Melbourne. People were like screaming and yelling out obscure songs from EPs we released three years ago, it was pretty awesome.''

The band is also excited about making a return to Dunedin.

''We haven't been to the South Island in over two years,'' Cussen said.

''The last time we were in Christchurch was like the day before the February earthquake and we haven't been back since. It was even before that the last time we were in Dunedin.''

After their Australian dates, the band will take some time in Brisbane to work on new recordings for a forthcoming album.

''We've kind of been working on it for a while,'' Cussen said.

''We're all real big fans of going out of Auckland to burrow away somewhere to work for a while. We did that with the last record, which we did in Wanganui, and it turned out so well, 'cause it wasn't like 'Okay, I've got to go do something else now, I'll see you guys later'. It was just wake up, record all day, go to sleep.''

To tide things over, God Bows have just released a brand-new single (which ''may or may not'' be included on the album) The Only Good Fnord is a Dead Fnord via bandcamp.
