British composer Adrian Sutton created Olivier-awarded and Tony-nominated scores for productions such as
War Horse,
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,
Angels in America and
Coram Boy. Early in his career Sutton wrote classical music and subsidised his higher-brow work by composing jingles for commercials. A notable early highlight was scoring the 1995 film
Treasure Island. In 1997 he was commissioned to write music for a radio series. The programme’s presenter’s brother was a theatre director and their introduction led to the first of several productions for Sutton for the National Theatre, where he really made his name. His
War Horse score was both released commercially and also turned into an orchestral suite. Sutton won an Olivier Award in 2013 for
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time; and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for his music for
Angels in America. He died on October 10 aged 58. — Agencies/Allied Media
