Filmmaker Spike Lee is throwing Michael Jackson a birthday party.

The party will be held in a Brooklyn park on Saturday on what would have been the 51st birthday of the late pop star.

Organizers say the party will go on despite heavy rain and possible thunderstorms.

They expect thousands to gather on a 15-acre lawn in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The party officially begins at noon and ends at 5pm EDT (0900 NZT).

In 1996, Lee directed two music videos for Jackson's song, "They Don't Care About Us."
