In a national review of the programme, Southern DHB recently received a positive endorsement for its roll-out of the National Bowel Screening programme at. This is testament to the hard work of the team involved. The response from the community has been incredibly positive, with many people who have been touched by the illness encouraging friends and whanau to participate. If you receive the kit in the mail, make sure to use it and return it. We know this programme will save lives.
Primary maternity system for whole district
After two years of consultation and development, we have now released our system of care for primary maternity services across the district. The plan expands the reach of maternity services to women and families across our large district by introducing maternal and child hubs in areas with no current formal infrastructure - Wanaka and Te Anau. While not primary birthing units, these will be equipped and available for urgent births, and integrated with other health services. The plan also recognises the importance of LMC midwives, and includes additional funding for those caring for remote rural women. We appreciate all those who contributed to this significant piece of work, and look forward to working together to ensure the best care for women and babies, wherever they live.
New Dunedin Hospital
The complex process of determining the layout of the New Dunedin Hospital site is beginning with the initial master site planning getting underway. The hospital will have a number of buildings with different functions so it is vital they work well together and make best use of the available space. This initial process, which will work towards a preferred option, is likely to be completed in late October.
Countdown Kids
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing contribution of Countdown with its Countdown Kids campaign, and thank you to everyone who supports this effort. Over the past 12 years, this has raised over $1.8 million dollars for our Dunedin and Southland Hospitals, and it is greatly appreciated. Thank you especially to Jhordaya Shaw and Teiana Kerena-Williams for being our Southern DHB ambassadors for this campaign – you are amazing!
