Psychiatrist joins Queenstown team

For the first time a Southern DHB psychiatrist will be based in the Queenstown area, as a permanent member of their Mental Health and Addictions team.

From early July, the team will welcome Dr Jo Thornton to provide support to those with psychiatric illnesses living in the community.

Medical Director Dr Brad Strong says the new role reflects the increase in demand in this community as its population continues to grow.

“As well as strengthening our mental health services based in the area, we are also continuing to build our network of primary and community-based providers and making use of technology-based solutions to enable us to reach as many people as possible.”

In January, Adventure Development launched the Thrive! Te Pae Ora service for young people in the Central Lakes area. Thrive! Te Pae Ora is an innovative, flexible, whānau inclusive, culturally-affirming, and free service designed to meet the needs of rangatahi/young people experiencing mild and moderate mental health needs, substance use and co-existing problems.
