Delight as Dunedin to host second All Blacks test this year

For the first time in history, Dunedin will host two All Black tests in the same year.

The city will host Fiji on July 10 — that was announced earlier this week — and has been given the plum test between the All Blacks and world champion Springboks.

The massive clash will be played on September 25 under the roof at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

It will be the 100th meeting between the great rivals.

It will also be 100 years since the Springboks and the All Blacks first played a test, in 1921, which was also played in Dunedin, at Carisbrook. The All Blacks won 13-5 that day.

It had always been the hope to secure the 100th test between the sides, and to be successful was simply fantastic, Otago Rugby Football Union general manager Richard Kinley said.

He said it could not have been done without the tremendous collaboration between the Otago union, Dunedin Venues Management Ltd and the Dunedin City Council.

"I can’t understate how important [it is] and how well we have worked together to be in a position to go to New Zealand Rugby and put such a compelling case to get a test of that magnitude down here," Kinley said.

"We worked very hard together, put a good plan to New Zealand Rugby and they were very pleased with our approach."

He said playing under a roof was an obvious advantage but so was having a test in a city that fully bought into the test atmosphere.

NZR still had a philosophy of playing tests around the country, and two tests in Dunedin would draw people from all round the South Island.

The Springboks test will have seats added at the Otago Daily Times stand end of the ground.

It was expected both teams would spend the week before the test in Dunedin.

Dunedin last hosted a test in 2018, when the All Blacks easily beat France.
