What you miss out on if you do not stop in the Mackenzie Country

We knew this part of New Zealand by heart. We had driven through it dozens of times on our way somewhere else. This winter we finally did the one thing we had never done, stayed. For years, the Mackenzie District was, for my wife Carolina and myself, a place we passed through rather than visited. Every trip between Queenstown and Christchurch followed the same script: a stop in Tekapo, a coffee by the lake, the obligatory photo, then straight back on to the road. What we had never done was exactly what we were missing. This winter, in the third week of July, with my in-laws freshly arrived from Chile and happy to look after our children, we gave ourselves something unusual, three days with no itinerary and no clock. Heavy snow had fallen the week before, and its traces still lined the roadside and the hills. We wanted to find out whether a landscape changes when you stop rushing through it. And, underneath that, whether we could change too. After years of marriage, children and shared schedules, it is easy to forget that once you were just two people looking at each other with nothing else to do. At this time of year, the trip’s first real visual reward is the Lindis Pass, snow reaching right down to the edge of the tarmac. We arrived in Tekapo as the afternoon light was fading, smoke rising from chimneys, the lake holding on to that turquoise that seems to defy the cold. We stayed at The Huts at Lakes Edge, inside Lakes Edge Holiday Park, simple timber-clad cabins that look straight out over the water. We dropped our bags where they landed and walked to dinner at TLV Restaurant, on Motuariki Lane, a few steps from the lake. At a time when many restaurants compete to impress, this one chose the harder path, doing the simple things well. Back at the cabin, we climbed into the hot tub while steam rose toward a sky filling up with stars. No phones, no interruptions. That was when we understood that the real luxury was not the view or the hot water, but having nothing urgent to do and time to look at each other the way we hadn’t in a while. A Church We Thought We Already Knew The next morning we walked to the Church of the Good Shepherd, a place we had passed dozens of times, but never this early. The first visitors arrived in silence. For the first time, we stopped to read its history. It was built in 1935 by the basin’s first settlers and a small sign notes that an open service is still held there on the first Sunday of every month. After so many trips, we had never once taken those thirty seconds. Maybe real travel is exactly that, putting the camera down and getting curious. From there we drove up to Mount John, home to the University of Canterbury’s observatory. Entry costs $14. From that lookout, lakes, mountains and plains stop looking like separate places and reveal themselves as a single stretch of land. The Corner Almost No One Visits The moment that stayed with us most had nothing to do with postcards. Coming down from Mount John, instead of heading straight back to Tekapo, we turned right and drove a few kilometres to the turn-off for Lake Alexandrina Rd, easy to miss if you’re in a hurry. Anyone rushing through would never see it, which is probably why it still holds a stillness other tourist spots have lost. A handful of timber cottages, old jetties reaching into the water, black swans gliding across a surface with no ripples. No buses, no souvenir shops. We sat by the lake while a small stream slipped slowly into its waters. For several minutes, neither of us felt the need to say anything and that shared quiet felt like a kind of closeness we had almost forgotten. Pukaki and the Last Night The next day we carried on toward Lake Pukaki, where distance feels different. For long stretches we barely passed another car, and the water changed colour with the morning light. We spent our last night at Lakestone Lodge, on a hillside off State Highway 8, between Twizel and Aoraki/Mount Cook. From the road you can barely guess what’s waiting above. Only once you arrive do you understand why so many people rate it among the best views in the area. Floor-to-ceiling windows pull the landscape into every room and the hot tub, angled toward the mountains, makes it hard to leave. Some of the warmth of the place also comes from its owners, Mike and Anna Bacchus, whose care for every detail is obvious, as though they were hosting guests in their own home. Twizel and Ōhau Before heading back, we stopped in Twizel, which was only just waking up at that hour, and had breakfast at Mint Folk & Co, recommended to us by other travellers. Good food, a well-considered space, good service and a menu that also runs to cold-pressed juice and craft beer for anyone after more than a coffee. It was a simple stop that ended up shaping the character of the trip more than any single attraction. If Tekapo wins you over with beauty and Pukaki with sheer scale, Ōhau wins you over with restraint. The small village sits by the lake with the same quiet respect you’d bring to walking into a church. “Imagine living here,” we said almost at the same time, without meaning to. We weren’t talking about any particular house, but about that stillness, about waking up every morning to that view. We visited the historic Lake Ōhau Lodge, nearly empty, since most guests were up at the nearby skifield in the snow. We even tried to put fuel in at its small pump and, seeing the price, looked at each other, laughed and trusted the tank to get us to Omarama. It did. What Changed Wasn’t the Landscape The drive back to Queenstown was as peaceful as the rest of the trip, clear sky, near-empty road. That was when something we’d missed along the way became clear. The trip had never really been about discovering a new region. Mackenzie was exactly the same as always. We were the ones who had changed, or maybe we had simply gone back to being who we were before life filled up with things left undone. For years we mistook knowing a place for stopping for a minute to take a photo and we probably did the same thing with our own relationship. It took three days without children or a schedule to remember that a couple, like a landscape, also needs someone to stay long enough to really look at it again. That, I think, is Mackenzie’s real gift. It doesn’t try to impress. Its beauty shows up once the traveller slows down and realises that between one lake and the next there isn’t just distance, there are stories, small towns and long conversations that would never have happened if we’d kept driving past. We came home with plenty of photographs, as you do from every trip. But the best of it never made it into the camera. It stayed in memory and in that feeling of having chosen each other again. If anyone reading this decides to make the same trip, as a couple, with family, or alone, I’ll leave them with one piece of advice. Don’t drive past. Read the signs. Have breakfast without watching the clock. Sit by a lake even when nothing at all is happening. Because some places and some people aren’t really known when you first arrive. You only get to know them once you decide to stay. If you go in winter, before setting out for Mackenzie, it’s worth checking the forecast and road conditions, especially given black ice warnings on stretches such as the Lindis Pass. Driving slowly and leaving margin for error matters at this time of year, just as much as the destination itself.
