Ideal for the new fruit grower

Fruit Trees is the latest in New Zealand Gardeners Homegrown series and it is by far the best.

Robert Guyton, who runs an organic orchard in Riverton, has contributed a great deal of the material, so the southern gardener can have confidence in what he writes.

He covers the basics, such as preparing the ground, what to plant and how to prune.

In the best part of the publication, Guyton describes, with excellent photographs, how to graft fruit trees, a great skill to acquire.

Other writers cover such topics as citrus and subtropical fruit, nuts and preserving your crops, while The Bugman, Ruud Kleinpaste, advises on pest and diseases.

Fruit Trees is a good introduction to an increasingly popular aspect of gardening and at $14.90, good value although being magazine-like does mean it will not last as long as a conventional gardening book.
